Copper is a living metal. Unlike stainless steel or silver, it reacts with air, water, and skin – and develops its own unique, warm patina over time. Many people love exactly this character. But if you want to restore the original, reddish-golden shine, you don’t need expensive products or a lot of time. Here is everything you need to know about caring for your copper jewelry.
Why copper darkens
As soon as copper comes into contact with oxygen and moisture, a thin layer of oxide forms on the surface. This initially makes the metal darker and browner, and later a slight greenish shimmer may develop. This is not a defect, but a natural process – and a beautiful sign that you are wearing genuine copper.
The 3 best home remedies for cleaning
1. Lemon and salt
The classic: Cut a lemon in half, sprinkle some salt on the cut surface, and gently rub the jewelry with it. The acid dissolves the oxide layer, while the salt acts as a fine abrasive. Then rinse thoroughly with clean water.
2. Vinegar and salt
For more tarnished pieces: Mix a teaspoon of salt into some white vinegar and soak the jewelry in it for a few minutes. Then buff with a soft cloth and rinse thoroughly.
3. Ketchup
It sounds unusual, but it works surprisingly well. The mild acidity of the tomatoes cleans gently. Apply a thin layer, leave it on for ten minutes, rinse – and you’re done.
Very important: dry thoroughly
No matter which method you choose: Dry your jewelry completely afterwards with a soft cotton or microfiber cloth. Residual moisture is the main reason why copper tarnishes quickly again.
How to preserve the shine longer
- Store airtight: A small zip-lock bag or a closed jewelry box significantly slows down oxidation.
- Put it on last: Apply perfume, creams, and hairspray first and let them sink in before putting on your jewelry.
- Take it off before water: It is best to remove it when showering, swimming, or going to the sauna – especially chlorine and salt water corrode copper.
- Polish regularly: Wiping it briefly with a dry cloth once a week is often enough.
What if your skin turns green?
Sometimes copper leaves a slight greenish shimmer on the skin. This is a completely normal reaction of the metal with moisture and can be easily washed off with soap and water. Anyone who wants to avoid this can seal the inside of a ring or bracelet with a very thin layer of clear nail polish.
Patina or shine – you decide
Ultimately, it is a matter of taste. Some love the freshly polished, reddish-golden look, while others prefer the dark, rustic patina that gives each piece its own story. The beauty of copper: You can switch between the two at any time. You can find even more tips on our copper care page.
